Aloha - Chew Valley Massage
A touch of Hawaii in the Chew Valley
Frequently Asked Questions
How is Lomi Lomi different?
Lomi Lomi targets the whole body at once, with long strokes that flow into each other, often without breaking contact. Strokes may start at the neck, and work their way all the way down to the toes and back up again. Often it will involve working on two parts of the body at once, using fingers, hands, and forearms. It can feel like multiple practitioners are at work. With a flavour of Hula movement, the strokes often have a wave-like quality, moving back and forth.

A big part of traditional Lomi Lomi is Huna Wisdom. This refers to the more spiritual side of the Hawaiian people, and their beliefs in the power of breath, their connection with nature, and the flow of energy, as well as bringing your mind into the quiet and calm 'alpha state'. Let me know if you are interested in this aspect.
How should I prepare for my first treatment?
Lomi Lomi is wonderfully relaxing, but is also intended to be healing and can be a time for reflection. Consider your intentions for receiving, and what stresses you hope to reduce.
What should I expect from my first session?
We will have a brief consultation for me to hear how you're feeling physically and mentally, and discuss areas that need more focus, or that should be avoided. I will talk you through the massage, and then invite you to get onto the table and get under a sarong. When I come back in I will add further draping as requested and then begin the massage. It can be tailored to your time, but I usually recommend 90 minutes.
What do I wear?
Maintaining contact and flow up and down the body via the hips is part of the Lomi Lomi style, so it is normally received without any underwear on. However a bottom cover is placed centrally for your modesty and your private area will be covered at all times. When working on the front of the body, you can choose to have your chest covered or uncovered.
If you would prefer to leave underwear on, that is absolutely fine. I can work to however you are most comfortable. Just be aware underwear might get a little oily and some strokes may be more limited.
Can I receive Lomi Lomi if I am pregnant?
Yes - Lomi Lomi is a wonderful nurturing treatment to receive during the rollercoaster of pregnancy. I am trained in pregnancy massage through the Bristol College of Massage and Bodywork. I prefer to work on clients beyond the first trimester when the pregnancy is more established.
Do you help treat injuries, or terminal or chronic illness?
Lomi Lomi is considered a healing massage, and should leave you feeling realigned and both physically and spiritually restored. However, I haven't had any formal medical training to treat specific illnesses or injury, and would recommend you seek a professional.
Is Lomi Lomi for me?
If you want deep tissue prodding or sports massage it may not be for you. I apply pressure to your liking, but generally Lomi Lomi is intended to be relaxing, working muscles and myofascia through flowing strokes.
Important notice.
While Lomi Lomi has a totally holistic approach to the body, and you may be more undressed than usual, this isn't a sexual service.
